Focus of research:
Research conducted by the department spans several fields, such as the philosophy and methodology of history, Russian and world history, the history of international relations, and areas including archaeology, anthropology, and ethnology. The department's tasks also include monitoring current trends in historical studies within Russia and abroad, and offering informational and methodological support for historical education in Russia.
The department publishes the academic journal Social Sciences and Humanities. Domestic and Foreign Literature. Series 5: History, which includes research articles, review articles, book reviews, translations, and abstracts covering topics such as Russian and world history, source studies, historiography, ethnology, anthropology, archaeology, and auxiliary sciences of history.
