Head of the Department of Global Issues – Natalia Yu. Lapina
The Department of Global Issues, founded in 1997 at INION RAN, conducts scientific, informational, and research activities concerning the major global challenges of the present day, including inequality, immigration, climate change, demography, environmental and food security, and the processes of globalization around the world.
The Department includes highly qualified specialists in political science, economics, and social geography, all possessing extensive research experience. The Department's staff maintains strong connections with research and educational institutions in Russia and actively engages in the scientific community.

- Globalization challenges and socio-economic development in the modern world;
- Globalization challenges in the second decade of the 21st century;
- Global and regional crisis phenomena in the context of geopolitical turbulence. Transformation of socio-economic and military-political development models in European and American states and institutions: opportunities and risks for Russia.
- Research topics
- Analytical and informational research on the processes by which countries enter the global economy and their respective “national models,” including an in-depth examination of the socio-economic, spatial, and political effects of globalization on all countries;
- Economic and societal structural changes amidst Globalization and the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside labor market transformations in developed economies;
- Analysis of the structure and characteristics of a “divided society” in Western countries: growing socio-spatial differentiation (global cities vs. “periphery”), and cultural and religious contradictions arising from increasing migration flows in a globalized society, coupled with the inadaptability of local migration systems;
- The political landscape of social fragmentation and changing preferences: the phenomenon of separatism and the characteristics of radical left and right-wing populism in Europe.
One of the Department's primary responsibilities is the preparation of materials and editorial work for “Current Problems of Europe” a leading scientific journal within INION RAN, listed in the RSCI database.
Focusing on scientific articles, analytical reviews, chapters in collective monographs, and translations, the Department's staff contribute analytical materials to the Russian press and engage in scientific events such as Russian and international conferences, workshops, and round tables.
