Department of European & American Studies
Focus of research:
- Research and analysis on the social development of contemporary Europe and the Americas;
- Up-to-date and future strategies and tactics of the Euro-Atlantic nations and institutions aimed at maintaining influence and presence on the global stage as the new world order evolves;
- Evolution of individual national states as well as transnational and supranational processes, such as regional integration, globalization, the world economy, international political order and migration;
- Russia’s international strategy and its relations with political actors from Europe and America on the global stage. This includes analyzing the policies of the European Union, OSCE, NATO and other international organizations;
- Conflicts and crises in contemporary Europe, the Euro-Atlantic and neighboring areas;
- Prospect of Russia’s transition from deep confrontation with the West to a kind of engagement - particularly in security and defense matters or at least in economic area by restoring to some extent trade and economic ties that were forcibly broken.
Over decades, the Department has been doing research in the field of European and American studies. Currently it is focusing on the European and American states as well as Euro-Atlantic institutions, particularly in the context of the global economic shifts and ongoing tensions between power centers at both global and regional levels.
The Department has been publishing extensively on these issues in academic journals and monographs, including the flagship journal Current Issues of Europe and European Security Bulletin. Both periodicals were founded and are currently led by Dr. Tatyana Parkhalina, the Editor-in-Chief and the former head of the Department whose academic activity significantly contributed to its rising as a highly professional research cell of INION.
The Department is currently led by Leading Research Fellow Dr. Olga Novikova. In addition to her role as the head of the Department she also oversees the Section for Western European studies. The Department also includes two other research sections: Section for Eastern European studies headed by Dr. Sergei Romanenko (Sc.D in History), and the Section for American studies led by Dr. Maxim Bratersky (Sc.D in Political Science). Both are internationally recognized scholars in their respective field.
