On March 20, 2025, the All-Russian Conference titled "Victory in the Far East: The Partnership of the USSR and East Asian Nations in Overcoming Militarist Japan" was held at INION RAN. The event was organized by the Department of Asian and African Studies. A total of nine reports were presented at the conference, which brought together representatives from INION RAN, the Institute of China and Modern Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Pirogov Russian National Research Institute of Medical Sciences and the State Academic University for the Humanities.

In their presentations, the participants highlighted the pivotal role of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Army in the defeat of militarist Japan during the war in the Far East. They also emphasized the significant contributions of the Chinese Red Army, the armed forces of the Republic of China and Korean guerrilla groups in achieving the overall victory. Furthermore, the discussions underscored the arduous and bloody path to this shared victory over a formidable enemy. The war was marked by extensive civilian casualties in China, widespread atrocities and violence against citizens and soldiers of the Republic of China, inhumane medical experiments conducted on prisoners in Japanese camps and unparalleled efforts to aid refugees within China. The establishment of military medical services in the Chinese armed forces amidst the chaos of war and epidemics was also a focus of the reports.

The conference proceedings are expected to result in the publication of articles in the academic journals "Social and Humanities: Domestic and Foreign Literature. Series 9: Oriental Studies and African Studies” and "Postcolonialism and Modernity". Additionally, some of the materials used in the presentations will contribute to a multi-authored monograph, “Life and Death in Fighting China”, which will be published to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory over militarist Japan and the anniversary of the Soviet-Chinese Treaty of Friendship, Alliance and Mutual Assistance (concluded in August 1945 and officially approved in Moscow on February 14, 1950).
