On 19 November 2024, INION RAN organized an international seminar on “Modern European Experience in Organizing and Conducting Applied Research in the Social Sciences: a Case Study of Climate-Driven Migration”.

This event was part of the INION RAN project “Academic Bridges”, initiated in 2023. Andrea Membretti, a research professor at the Universities of Pavia and Turin, presented his findings on “vertical migration” from Northern Italy’s metropolitan areas to rural Alpine regions. Professor Membretti discussed the research goals, methodology, and the process of establishing “support coalitions” for the project.

The study’s findings (examining the impact of global warming, especially “heat waves” in Italian cities, the pandemic’s role in urban-to-rural migration trends, aging population’s influence on migration preferences, and the related challenges for local authorities, businesses, and the non-profit sector) and its execution (mobilizing resources from businesses, local government, and national and European funds for significant practical outcomes) are highly relevant for Russian researchers involved in climate change adaptation, spatial development policy, and the application of European research practices in resource allocation.

Participants:

• Andrea Membretti, PhD in Sociology, University of Pavia and University of Turin, Italy

• Naciye Selin Senocak, Centre d'Etudes Diplomatique et Strategiques (CEDS), UNESCO Chair Cultural Diplomacy
