Main milestones of scientific biography and information about teaching activities (including graduate students)
Mikhail Ilyin was born in 1948 in Moscow. He studied philology in Moscow University in 1966–1974 and got his first PhD (candidate of science by Russian nomination) in the history of English literature. In 1974 he joined Student Council of the USSR and Committee of Youth Organizations of the USSR for a full-time employment. From 1977 to 1982 he had been a Soviet representative to the International Union of Students. In 1983–1988 Ilyin had been with the Soviet Peace Committee. While with NGO family he studied political activism, student and peace movements. In the 1980s he shifted to theory and methodology of political science and later to comparative politics.
In 1988 Ilyin joined the INION for a full-time employment and continued there since then in various full-time or part-time employments. Since 2008 he is the head of the Centre for Advanced Methodologies in Social Sciences and Humanities of the INION and the editor-in-chief of the yearbook METHOD.
In 1989–1991 Ilyin was the deputy editor-in-chief of the journal Polis, in 1996–2005 its director general and in 2002–2006 its editor-in-chief.
In 1991–1994 Ilyin was deputy director of the Institute of Comparative Politics of RAS and till 2002 had various part-time jobs there.
Since 1990 Ilyin joined MGIMO University first as a part-time professor and then from 1994 to 2011 as a full-time one, continuing since then till now as a part-time professor. In 1997 he got further PhD (doctor of sciences by Russian nomination) in political sciences.
Since 2011 Ilyin is professor of the Higher School of Economics.
Current research interests embrace epistemology and methodology of science, cognitive studies, evolution theory, anthropogeny and glottogenesis, semiotics and social semiotics, morphology and evolutionary morphology, geochronopolitics, intellectual and conceptual history.
Ilyin’s priority area of research is evolution of the three primary cognitive abilities of recognizing (1) sensual signals, (2) patterns, (3) relevance or meaning of functional relations into elaborate scientific methods of (1) metretics – calculus and statistical studies of numerical data-sets, (2) morphetics – study of forms, (3) semiotics – study of human cognition and communication.
His other priority area is evolution of time-space of human habitat and autopoiesis, particularly within Europe and Eurasia, interface areas of Balto-Pontida and Greater Mediterranean.
