History of the Centre

Centre for Russian Studies was created at INION RAN in 2008 with the goal of studying Russia as a kind of integrity (a special sociohistorical and sociocultural phenomenon). In our studies, Russia does not stand out from the general historical stream, is not opposed to the rest of humanity. The Centre was not aimed at creating some kind of new science about Russia—only at deepening knowledge about it.

We proceeded from the fact that it is necessary to overcome the separation of different sciences involved in Russian Studies, to eliminate the deficits in understanding this type of sociality that arise when using exclusively Western research methodologies (more precisely, when applying them as universal ones). It was assumed that the Centre would become one of the discussion platforms where approaches, ideas, concepts, and texts adequate to these tasks would be discussed.

The Centre was created taking into account the fact that INION RAN provides great opportunities for multidisciplinary research in Russia. The Institute’s organizational structure contains the main “branches” of social and humanitarian knowledge (scientific departments were formed in accordance with the “disciplinary” and “regional geographic” principles). Therefore, the research space of the INION RAN is a kind of "experimental site" of Russian studies.

Interaction with higher education institutions

The Centre for Russian Studies cooperates with the Faculty of Political Science of Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Higher School of Economics, Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH), Southern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don), etc. Within the framework of such cooperation, the Centre develops training courses and prepares educational materials for higher education, holds open lectures, scientific seminars and conferences, and holds consultations and provides academic expertise of qualifying research works.

Interaction with other centers of Russian studies is one of the most important areas of the Centre’s activity. Among our partners is the Institute of Russian Studies at Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest), with which in 2014 a cooperation agreement was concluded. Together with the University of Budapest and the Russian State University for the Humanities, the Centre is training masters in the field of Russian Studies.

The Centre maintains contacts with the Russian-Armenian University (Yerevan), Warsaw University, Shanghai State Linguistic University.

Academic events

Since 2009, the Centre for Russian Studies has been conducting scientific seminars in which leading experts of scientific and scientific-educational institutions participate (seminar materials for 2010–2013 have been published). The Centre interacts with major research and coordination structures, Russian and international (the Foundation for Contemporary History, the German Historical Institute in Moscow, the Franco-Russian Centre for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Moscow, etc.).

The Centre for Russian Studies has repeatedly acted as the organizer of major scientific events. Among them are the international scientific conferences “Personality and Social Group in the History and Modernity of Central and Eastern Europe” (2010, together with the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian-Hungarian Commission of Historians), “‘Liberation of Man’—reformatory ideas in Russia and Europe (19th–21st centuries)” (2011, together with Franco-Russian Centre for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Moscow and German Historical Institute in Moscow), annual Humanitarian readings at the Russian State University for the Humanities (section “Russian Studies”), annual conferences and seminars of the North Caucasian Research Institute of Economic and Social Problems of the Southern Federal University.

The Centre is represented at the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals (Russia and the Modern World, Political Science, Politia).

The Centre carries out expert cooperation with governmental bodies (the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, etc.), takes part in the work of Russian public organizations (Russian Society of Political Scientists, Petersburg Dialogue, International Academy of Television and Radio, etc.), popular science projects of Russian museums and libraries (State Central Museum of Modern History of Russia, Yeltsin Centre, etc.).

An important area of ​​the Centre’s activities is the popularization of Russian science on television, radio, in the press, and at various international meetings in Russia and abroad.

Publishing activity

Since 2009, the Centre has published a series of collections of articles, Proceedings on Russian Studies.
